Ragged tooth Sharks / Grey Nurse Shark

Carcharias Taurus

From June to November, Aliwal Shoal is famous for its Ragged Tooth Sharks. Encounters with divers have shown that, despite their size, smalltooth sand tigers are docile and do not react aggressively even when closely approached.

The sharks typically congregate in coastal waters, at depths of between 60 and 190m, although deeper depths have been recorded. Often they will shelter in caves or gutters during the day, and come out at night to feed. During the day they exhibit sluggish behavior, becoming more active during the night. The grey nurse shark is the only known shark to gulp and store air in its stomach in order to maintain neutral buoyancy while swimming.

Although they are harmless, they have an imposing appearance and their ferocious set of teeth is impressive. They use Aliwal Shoal as a mating ground and can be seen in Cathedral, Shark Alley, Raggies Cave and various other dive spots. They are quite docile while on our coast but still provide an exciting adrenaline pumped dive!
